Cipher Glasses

Those drinking glasses are designed by serbian designer Damjan Stankovic. When empty they show a mosaic that seems to be random. But when you fill it with a drink the name of that drink will appear.

Cipher Glass 2
Cipher Glass 3

Differently colored shapes are scattered across the glass surface in a seemingly random pattern, however their position is hardly accidental. The true purpose of the glass mosaic is revealed when colored liquid is poured into it (orange juice, milk, Nescafe or coke) The pattern of shapes and empty spaces on the glass combined with the color of the liquid inside the glass end up forming a textual sign, revealing what exact drink or refreshment you are having, with each side of the glass reserved for a specific drink.

Damjan Stankovic is a genius! Unfortunately this is just a concept at the moment but I will buy them as soon as they're out.

Bulbdial - a digital sundial

Bulbdial works like a sundial but it uses diodes instead of the sun. It also has better resolution showing both hours, minutes and seconds. David Friedman came up with the idea and the guys at "Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories" built it.

A house on a tiny island

An amazing house built on a rock in Narragansett Bay. Built in 1905 by J. S. Lovering Wharton. Bought in 1961 by the current owner Mr. Wood for $3,600.

He (Mr. Wood) and a crew of family and friends who share his passion for the place’s "deep bohemian funk," as Nicholas Benson, a stone carver from Newport, put it, have dedicated their time and skills (plumbing and wiring experience are always particularly welcome) to keeping the place from slipping into the water forever.

Vertical Farm

The vertical farm is a possible solution to a big problem:

By the year 2050, nearly 80% of the earth's population will reside in urban centers. Applying the most conservative estimates to current demographic trends, the human population will increase by about 3 billion people during the interim. An estimated 109 hectares of new land (about 20% more land than is represented by the country of Brazil) will be needed to grow enough food to feed them, if traditional farming practices continue as they are practiced today. At present, throughout the world, over 80% of the land that is suitable for raising crops is in use (sources: FAO and NASA). Historically, some 15% of that has been laid waste by poor management practices. What can be done to avoid this impending disaster?

The projects homepage verticalfarm.com features lots of info and design proposals for the vertical farm like this one below by Blake Kurasek:

Steampunk Toilet

Patrick Brawley has built his own steampunk toilet. I'm not sure that mixing electricity with fluids and genitalia is a very good idea, but it sure looks cool.
